Proposed tour route - updated

Day 1 : Sydney - Cobar

Our first day is just about driving and getting out into the areas we want to visit as quickly as possible. If we arrive before sunset we can look for some local birds to photograph maybe as we approach Cobar, such as Red-capped Robin or woodswallows

Day 2 : Cobar to Bourke via Gundabooka NP

Early start looking especially for Chestnut-breasted Quailthrush close to Cobar before an hour and a half drive to Gundabooka NP. Targets here will include Splendid Fairywren, Chestnut-rumped & Inland Thornbill, Hooded Robin, Red-capped Robin, White-browed Treecreeper. Arrive in Bourke in time to look for Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos around town, or parrots around the caravan park

Day 3 : Bourke to Tibooburra via Wanaaring and “The Cut Line”

Another big driving day punctuated by a stop at Wanaaring on the Paroo River where we will refuel and check for Spotted Bowerbird and Little Friarbird. We will check Lake Altiboulka along the Cut Line in case it has water in it for waterbirds, and stop for anything worthy on the road as we get close to Tibooburra in the late afternoon.

Day 4 - 5 : Explore area from Tibooburra including Mt Wood

From our base in Tibooburra for 3 nights we will explore various areas depending on access. Targets will be Inland Dotterel, Gibberbird, Red-backed Kingfisher, Orange Chats, Flock Bronzewings, Cinnamon Quailthrush, Chestnut-crowned Babbler and maybe Grey Grasswren. Emus will always be targeted especially if we see stripey chicks!

Day 6 : Tibooburra - Cameron Corner

An early start to make the most of the good morning light again stopping for anything we see and checking out Lake Pinaroo (currently dry), before arriving at Cameron Corner - the junction of NSW, SA & QLD. We have two nights here.

Day 7 : Cameron Corner

Explore dunes west of Cameron Corner for Eyrean Grasswren, chats, button-quail and any parrots or Cinnamon Quailthrush. We will also be keeping an eye in the sky and trees for any sign of Letter-winged Kite or Grey Falcon. Both unlikely but possible.

Day 8 : Cameron Corner to Innamincka

The route we take to get to Innamincka will depend on which roads are open at the time. If the Strzelecki Track is open we may head that way and search for Letter-winged Kites. If this is the case we will definitely want to get on the road super early. Note at the moment this is closed. Alternatively we will travel north from the corner arriving in Innamincka later afternoon where we will stay for 3 nights

Day 9 - 10: Innamincka

This area is home to the Burke & Wills Dig tree as well as the graves of these infamous explorers. It will be wonderful to see this area after the recent flooding of the Cooper Creek, and should be alive with birds.

Day 11 : Innamincka to Eulo

A decent drive again today but with the hope of stopping as we see things and getting to Eulo in time to visit Eulo Bore.

Day 12 : Eulo to Bourke

Early morning session at Eulo Bore not far out of town for Mulga Parrots, Bourkes Parrots and Bluebonnets. Drive to Bourke hopefully with time in the afternoon to look for parrots around the caravan park or Red-tailed Black Cockatoos

Day 13 : Bourke to Nyngan

We don’t have too far to drive today so we can explore along the Darling River towards Louth before heading to Nyngan in time for some birding around the riverside caravan park.

Day 14 : Nyngan to home

Our last day with a pretty big drive back to Sydney.

NOTE: Current flooding coming from the channel country in QLD may impact the itinerary.
Rainfall in the area (or lack thereof) will also impact both species diversity and accessibility.
Essentially I will do my absolute best to make this an awesome trip, however we are, as always, at the mercy of conditions at the time.

Accommodation will be in the best motels available. In places like Cameron Corner, there is literally only one place to stay and it is very basic workers accommodation with a separate amenities block. In Tibooburra though, we will have one of the nicest hotels you can think of!

Dinners, drinks, travel insurance, personal items

NOTES:

* As with any tour, unfortunately we cannot control the weather or indeed the wildlife. We'll do everything in our power to find the best subjects to photograph but things like how intense or early/late the wet season is can bring big changes from year to year.
* Whilst we want to get great images of as many of the special species from this amazing region as we can; this isn't a tour to try to quickly tick off as many species as possible and move on.
*We always strongly recommend that you organise your own travel and equipment insurance at the time of booking.
